Mexico’s national team is in San Diego preparing for their Gold Cup quarterfinal against Saudi Arabia in Phoenix. While awaiting the big match, Santiago Giménez and Edson Álvarez enjoyed a surprise basketball session with NBA star Jimmy Butler at his home.

Butler shared footage on social media of the footballers attempting shots – though he jokingly nailed a basket with his foot, something neither Giménez nor Álvarez managed. The trio signed jerseys and posed for photos, joined by Butler’s friend, boxer Ryan García.

Javier Aguirre has allowed his players to briefly step away from full concentration to enjoy moments of relaxation ahead of the match against Saudi Arabia. Mexico is aiming to defend its 2023 Gold Cup title and secure a historic tenth championship in the tournament. Both Santiago and Edson, key figures in the national team, spent time with Butler – who played a game in Mexico City this season before being traded from Miami to the Warriors. During that visit, he was seen around the city in cafés and clothing stores.
